Abacus Mental Math Curriculum

Our Abacus Mental Math curriculum is organized into 10 progressive levels, with each level building on the skills developed previously. Students attend one two-hour class each week and complete 15–20 minutes of daily practice at home.

Each level includes structured workbooks, guided instruction, hands-on abacus practice, visualization exercises, and mental math activities designed to improve speed, accuracy, concentration, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

By the end of the program, students are equipped to solve increasingly complex calculations using mental visualization while demonstrating greater confidence, independence, and focus in their academic work.

Students are introduced to the abacus and develop the fundamental skills needed for future learning.

Students learn:

  • Parts of the abacus and correct bead movements

  • Proper finger techniques and movement exercises

  • Number recognition, counting, and place value

  • Single-digit and two-digit addition and subtraction

  • Basic visualization techniques

  • Speed-writing exercises

  • Jumbled-number dictation

  • Flash-card activities for rapid bead recognition

Students expand their arithmetic abilities while beginning to transition from the physical abacus to mental calculation.

 

Students learn:

  • Two-digit and three-digit addition and subtraction

  • Faster and more accurate calculations

  • Mental visualization of the abacus

  • Mental addition and subtraction

  • Multiplication tables

  • Basic one-digit multiplication

  • Improved concentration, memory, and calculation speed

Students apply advanced abacus and visualization techniques to increasingly complex mathematical operations.

 

Students learn:

  • Three-digit, four-digit, and five-digit addition and subtraction

  • Two-digit by one-digit multiplication

  • One-digit, two-digit, and three-digit division

  • Division with remainders

  • Long division

  • Percentages

  • Decimal operations

  • Squares and square roots

  • Order of operations using BODMAS/BEDMAS

  • Advanced mental math, speed, and accuracy
